Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) platforms have become the dominant architecture for enterprise network security, replacing traditional VPN and firewall-centric models that were designed for an era when employees worked primarily in offices.

The SASE market has reached $20 billion annually, growing at 30% year-over-year. Leaders including Zscaler, Palo Alto Networks, and Cloudflare provide cloud-delivered security that follows users regardless of their location or device.

The architecture combines SD-WAN networking with cloud-native security services including secure web gateway, cloud access security broker, zero trust network access, and firewall-as-a-service. All functions are delivered from a global network of points of presence.

Enterprise adoption has been driven by the permanent shift to hybrid work. When 40% of the workforce operates outside the corporate network, traditional perimeter security becomes irrelevant. SASE secures the user rather than the network perimeter.

Implementation challenges include integrating SASE with legacy applications, managing the transition from existing security infrastructure, and vendor consolidation as organizations move from best-of-breed point solutions to platform approaches. Most enterprises are on 2-3 year migration paths.
